DYSPHAGIA THERAPY COURSES
NMES & sEMG in Dysphagia Management: The Guardian Way® (eLearning + Live Lab)
Pediatrics and Adults
This course is offered for .65 ASHA CEUs with combination of eLearning and live virtual lab with video. All participants will be required to complete 5.5 hours of eLearning prior to completing 1 hour live virtual lab.
As a result of this activity, the learner will be able to:
- Define and describe the properties of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and explain the impact on muscle tissue
- Define surface electromyography (sEMG) and describe function in analyzing and recording the electrical energy of muscle movement
- Determine the candidacy criteria for the use of NMES and sEMG as adjunct treatments of dysphagia in combination with traditional treatment approaches
- Discuss and demonstrate the application of The Guardian Way® therapeutic protocol in the treatment of dysphagia
- Train clinicians to modify electrical stimulation parameters that is customized to the patient, their pathology and diagnosis.
- Discuss the use of sEMG as biofeedback to benefit patient outcomes
- Discuss Electromyography Triggered Stimulation (ETS), a functional treatment that is patient centered requiring the patient to meet a sEMG threshold and NMES will be delivered during the swallow if the threshold is met.
NMES in Dysphagia Management: The Guardian Way® (eLearning + Live Lab)
Pediatrics and Adults
This course is offered for 0.55 ASHA CEUs in an interactive live webinar format. This course is for 4.5 hours eLearning & 1 hours lab. 0.55 ASHA CEUs.
As a result of this activity, the learner will be able to:

Course Description
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) with sEMG (Surface Electromyography) is a fantastic modality of therapy to keep sharp in your tool box, but what if that tool has gone dull? How do you keep that skill sharpened without feeling inadequate in a pediatric patient’s home? Allow this functional, hands-on guided practice opportunity to be your sharpening stone! In this course, you will be guided through the Guardian Way’s Aspire 2 device to re-familiarize yourself with the programs, placements, and the surface EMG component, which will enable your treatment to be game-changing for your pedi patients! Join us for a refreshing of your skill set and place the bar for excellent therapy even higher!
As a result of this activity, the learner will be able to:
- List the programs of the NMES device for optional use during the treatment modality and the patients/diagnoses most appropriate for each.
- Demonstrate normative values of muscular output and readings with the use of sEMG and identify abnormal values.
- Demonstrate the placements available for usage during the modality of NMES.
- Formulate at least 3 functional and specific goals to utilize on a patient's plan of care in conjunction with the use of NMES as a modality.
